Questions about Egypt

Seasons

When is the tourist season?
When to travel to Egypt?

WINTER

Day +23-25°C
Night +15-17°C
Sea +17-19°C

Winter in Egypt is very mild and warm, it’s the perfect time for taking walks and sunbathing. However, the seawater temperature is quite uncomfortable for swimming, that’s why most hotels in Egypt have several heated outdoor pools which are an attractive alternative to the sea.

Fairly strong winds blow from December to February, so a carding is a must for evening walks.

SPRING

Day +29-31°C
Night +25-26°C
Sea +22-24°C

In March the sea is still rather cool but the air is getting warmer and warmer every day. Spring in Egypt will be highly appreciated by travelers who come to the country first of all to visit numerous tourist attractions and get impressions.

SUMMER

Day +38-40°C
Night +30-32°C
Sea +28-30°C

Summer in Egypt will be pleasant only for those who like burning heat. In summer months the temperature rises up to 42°C. At this time of year guided tours may seem to be exhausting.

We strongly recommend wearing hats and using sunscreen regularly when going outside.

AUTUMN

Day +30-32°C
Night +25-26°C
Sea +26-28°C

Autumn is the best time to go on holiday to Egypt, since the sea is still warm and the weather is great for going on guided tours.

It should be noted that autumn in Egypt is a high season, so the resorts of the country get overcrowded with tourists and prices for accommodation get higher.

ENTRY RULES FOR TRAVELERS ARRIVING IN CAIRO, HURGHADA AND SHARM EL SHEIKH (DATED 01/05/2021)

  • Most foreign visitors who arrive in Cairo and Hurghada need a visa that can be obtained on arrival at the airport. The visa on arrival is a single-entry travel document which permits a short stay of up to 30 days. The cost of the visa fee is 25 USD. Travelers can pay this amount only in cash in either USD, EUR, or GBP.
  • A visa is not required for most of the foreign citizens if they arrive at the resorts located on the Sinai Peninsula, e.g. Sharm El Sheikh. Instead of the visa eligible travelers are issued a free entry permission stamp ‘Sinai Only’ which allows holders to stay for a maximum of 14 days, on the condition that they do not leave their resort during their stay. To stay in the Sinai resorts for longer periods or travel outside of the peninsula, it will be necessary to apply for a visa on arrival which costs 25 USD and permits a stay of up to 30 days.
  • All the tourists are required to fill out a landing card at an airport.

NB!

  • The visa fee (25 USD) is not imposed on children registered in their parents’ international passports.
  • An Egyptian visa is a stamp stuck on a passport.
  • Airport staff often offer tourists their assistance in filling out landing cards. The estimated cost of such assistance for one family is 10-15 USD. In order to save money, we recommend studying a sample of a filled out landing card posted on our website to be able to complete the form by yourself on the spot.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE RATES
ON 12.12.2022:

  • 1 USD ~ 24,6 EGP
  • 1 EUR ~ 26 EGP

WHERE CAN USD AND EUR BE EXCHANGED TO EGYPTIAN POUNDS?

  • At the airport;
  • At the reception in hotels;
  • At exchange offices;
  • In banks.

WHERE CAN EGP BE EXCHANGED BACK TO USD OR EUR?

  • Since 2019 it’s impossible to exchange Egyptian pounds back to USD or EUR, so we highly recommend tourists to change small amounts of money.

ARE USD AND EUR ACCEPTED FOR PAYMENT IN SHOPS/ RESTAURANTS?

  • Yes, almost everywhere. However, travelers should bear in mind that an official exchange rate can be different from the one in an establishment accepting the payment.

TAKING NATIONAL CURRENCY OUT OF THE COUNTRY

  • Under Egyptian law, it’s illegal to take Egyptian pounds out of the country.

NB!

Always count the change very carefully. The most common way to deceive tourists in Egypt is to give them 50 piaster banknotes instead of 50 pound notes. The banknotes look very similar, so foreign tourists often pay attention only to the denomination of a note, disregarding its unit of account (pounds or piasters).
